COACH MIKE

Christian. Husband & Father of four.

20-year Retired Marine Veteran. Gunnery Sergeant (aka GUNNY).

Native Texan. Member of Marine Ultra Runners Club of America (MURCA).

I began my running journey during my time in the Marine Corps, where I discovered a passion for pushing my limits both physically and mentally. Encountering inspiring mentors along the way, I expanded from training for the Marine Corps’ Physical Fitness Test to conquering 5Ks, 10Ks, and eventually marathons.

In Southern California, I found guidance from experienced runners (coaches) like Pastor Jim Britts and Trevor Sybert, propelling me to new heights in the sport. As captain of “Team Humble and Handsome,” we achieved remarkable success in races like the Ragnar Relay SoCal (2016 & 2017). Transitioning to ultramarathons during my final years in the Marines, I continued to push boundaries and deepen my understanding of running.

Driven by my obsession with the sport and a desire to share my knowledge, I evolved from participant to coach. In 2020 alone, I logged thousands of miles and completed numerous races, including challenging ultramarathons. Now, as a running coach, I'm dedicated to helping others experience the transformative power of running and achieve their goals.

Q & A

What’s the toughest event you’ve ever run?

It’s a tie. The 100-mile Treadmill Race sucked pretty bad as my first Hundo and then there was the Rocky Raccoon 100 miler that I attempted to quit, but God saw fit to introduce me to a Race Course Safety Director who would not allow me to do that. I finished after dragging both feet for the final 20-mile loop. Ouch!

What is the best piece of advice that you have learned and continue to pass on to other runners?

this is everything to me: “pain management and effort negotiation.”

What’s something people may not know about you?

I smoked cigarettes for 10 years (13 -23 yo). It’s the only thing I’ve ever quit on. Wink!

COACH ADAM

I’m a UESCA-certified running coach, driven by the transformative experience that running provides its athletes. My own performance as a runner is a testament to my work ethic and that of other running coaches that have invested in me along the way. I enjoy running for many reasons, but I enjoy distance and trail running the most.

Through 2019-2020, I made a solid effort to improve my own lifestyle and athletic performance by greatly increasing my capacity as an athlete. That effort took me as far as successfully completing my first two 50K ultramarathons that year. During that process, I gained valuable insight on data-driven progress as well as the ability to extend my physical and mental boundaries as an athlete.

I bring an analytical approach and a gentle encouragement to my coaching style as I focus on data-driven progress and methodologies like the 80/20 Running and Maffetone methods. In other words, “I let the numbers speak for themselves.” With a commitment to understanding each runner's journey and serving as their biggest fan, I craft personalized plans to help athletes achieve their goals. I remain updated on the continuous evolution of running, listening to podcasts and participating in coaching communities. My personal aim is to instill a love of running and foster healthier lifestyles for the athletes I get to serve while providing a deeper understanding their performance.

Q & A

What’s the toughest event you’ve ever run?

Razorback Running Revival 55K. Not only was it my longest race, but I was alone for hours at a time.

What is the best piece of advice that you have learned and continue to pass on to other runners?

Run your race! Don’t compare yourself to others and feel good. You’ll only continue on a journey that you enjoy and feel empowered on.

What’s something people may not know about you?

I’m a big fan of gardening.
